ARTIST'S DEMONSTRATIONS
Mondays, 11-2: Kate Martinson, Nålbinding is a fabric creation technique predating both knitting and crochet. Also known in English as "knotless netting," "knotless knitting," or "single needle knitting," the technique is distinct from crochet in that it involves passing the full length of the working thread through each loop, unlike crochet where the work is formed only of loops, never involving the free end. It also differs from knitting in that lengths must be pieced together during the process of nålebinding, rather than a continuous strand of yarn that can easily be pulled out.
Tuesdays, 11-2: Ellen MacDonald, Chip-Carving, Chip carving is a centuries-old art form of decorating wooden items. The decoration is formed by making angled cuts into the wood. It can make an otherwise plain object into a piece of art and there is no end to the variety of designs possible. The work is portable, done inside or out, at home or away, with just one inexpensive chip carving knife.
Wednesdays, 11-2: Dave Smith, Fly-tying. Dave is a member of The Iowa Drfitless Area Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He has taught and mentored fly fishers for many years.
Thursdays, 11-2: Harley Refsal, Wood-carving. Harley is an internationally recognized figure carver, specializing in Scandinavian flat-plane style carving. He has taught, exhibited and published widely.
Fridays, 11-2: Ruth Green, Rosemåling, or rosemaling, Norwegian for "decorative painting", (applied decoration or embellishment, decorative, decorated [rosut, rosute, rosete, rosa] and "å måle, å male" to paint) is the name of a form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway. Some art historians interpret "rose" as a reference to the rose flower, although the floral elements are often so stylized that no specific flower is identifiable and not used at all in some designs. Rosemåling is a style of decorative painting on wood that uses stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns.
